چکیده

This paper reviews the recent advances of finitevolume techniques applied to the solutions of Maxwell’s equations, placing emphasis on the microwave engineering perspective. The theoretical foundations, as well as variations of cellcentered finite-volume algorithms are described together with the modules necessary for the practical application of the method. The main advantage of finite-volume algorithms is their applicability to unstructured meshes, which provides great geometrical flexibility for modeling complex electromagnetic problems. As a 3-D simulation example, the coupling between two Archimedean spiral antennas is presented, illustrating the outstanding capabilities of the method but also addressing the associated computational costs. Weighting the strengths and drawbacks of the finitevolume time-domain method, a summary of its potential is given in the conclusion of the paper. Index Terms – Computational electromagnetics (CEM), Time domain analysis, Frequency domain analysis, Finite-Volume Time Domain (FVTD) method.

Finite-Difference Time-Domain Simulation of Light Propagation in 2D Periodic and Quasi-Periodic Photonic Structures

Ultra-short pulse is a promising technology for achieving ultra-high data rate transmission which is required to follow the increased demand of data transport over an optical communication system. Therefore, the propagation of such type of pulses and the effects that it may suffer during its transmission through an optical waveguide has received a great deal of attention in the recent years. We...

Application of the Schwarz-Christoffel Transformation in Solving Two-Dimensional Turbulent Flows in Complex Geometries

In this paper, two-dimensional turbulent flows in different and complex geometries are simulated by using an accurate grid generation method. In order to analyze the fluid flow, numerical solution of the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations are solved using CFD techniques. Considering the complexity of the physical geometry, conformal mapping is used to generate an orthogonal grid by means of...

Fully discrete finite element approaches for time-dependent Maxwell's equations

Many problems in sciences and industry involve the solutions of Maxwell’s equations, for example, problems arising in plasma physics, microwave devices, diffraction of electromagnetic waves. In this paper, we are interested in the numerical solution of time-dependent Maxwell’s equations in a bounded polyhedral domain in three dimensions. In the literature, one can find a great deal of work on n...

Coupling Nonlinear Element Free Galerkin and Linear Galerkin Finite Volume Solver for 2D Modeling of Local Plasticity in Structural Material

This paper introduces a computational strategy to collaboratively develop the Galerkin Finite Volume Method (GFVM) as one of the most straightforward and efficient explicit numerical methods to solve structural problems encountering material nonlinearity in a small limited area, while the remainder of the domain represents a linear elastic behavior. In this regard, the Element Free Galerkin met...

An oversampling technique for the multiscale finite volume method to simulate electromagnetic responses in the frequency domain

In order to reduce the computational cost of the simulation of electromagnetic responses in geophysical settings that involve highly heterogeneous media, we develop a multiscale finite volume method with oversampling for the quasistatic Maxwell’s equations in the frequency domain. We assume a coarse mesh nested within a fine mesh that accurately discretizes the problem. For each coarse cell, we...
